Helen Keller's Teacher, Annie Sullivan, review
Helen Keller's Teacher is a book we loved learning from as we studied Attentiveness (Konos Unit Study) in our homeschool. Helen Keller's story was told from the point of view of Helen's amazing teacher, Annie Sullivan. The the character of Annie Sullivan is revealed through her childhood troubles, her difficult life circumstances, and her progressing blindness. Annie overcame such obstacles and through extraordinary determination, she was well equipped for her upcoming position as Helen Keller's teacher. Helen, who had been deaf and blind since she was an infant, was a spoiled hard case. Her parents had let her have her way because they couldn't handle her and they felt sorry for her. She pitched tantrums to get what she wanted. Her family felt that it was proper to have pity on her by giving in to her demands. When Annie became Helen's teacher, all of that changed. Before Helen could learn productive things, she would have to be taught discipline and self control. Annie required Helen use her fork properly at meals and to use good table manners. The rest of Helen's family was banished from the dining room when they insisted on interfering with this needed discipline. We could appreciate Annie's strong determination and tenacity as she applied her skills to the strong-willed Helen Keller. This incident, as well as others that followed, broke through Helen's shell and eventually allowed her to learn like a sponge from her determined teacher. I really enjoyed reading aloud Helen Keller's Teacher. This book was easy for my 5 year old and 7 year old sons to understand. As far as our unit study on Attentiveness, this book gave them an appreciation for hearing and seeing and a greater understanding of the disabilities of blindness and deafness. But most importantly, Helen Keller's Teacher showed them a person (Annie) demonstrating hard work, determination, and tough love as well as the fruit that comes from such virtue... namely, the rescuing of a person (Helen) who was lost in her darkness and silence and enabling her to overcome her faults and begin to learn, thereby giving her the world!
